Mariah Peaslee

I’m a third-generation native of Reno, Nevada, and grew up in a large family. Four brothers and two sisters kept life interesting, made me tough, and kept me on my toes growing up. I have an associate degree in Criminal Justice and spent many years at home raising my now grown daughter and son. I am now happily married and enjoy spending time with my husband and family.

What do you do at the Mission?
I work at the Mission as a volunteer coordinator, administrative assistant, and supervisor for the women’s clothing department at the warehouse. Basically, if I’m needed and capable of doing the work, I’ll jump in and help.

How did you end up at the Mission?
A few years ago, I was at the most hopeless place I’ve ever been. I no longer wanted to live, and alcohol had completely ravaged my body and life. I made a desperate plea to God to save my life, miraculously found out about the Mission, and ended up here five days later.

What is one thing about you that surprises people?
I have so many interests and love so many strange things, but it surprises some people when they learn that I wanted to be a herpetologist when I was a kid. I’m very skilled at catching snakes, lizards and other assorted critters that people normally run from.

What hobbies do you have?
I love reading, documentaries, museums, traveling, basically learning about the fascinating things in the world around me.

What is your favorite movie or television show?
There are so many, but the “Star Wars” movies will always be my favorites, and “Seinfeld” is one of the greatest shows of all time in my opinion.

What is the best criticism you have ever received?
Quit being so stubborn, and it’s OK to be wrong sometimes.

What do you consider your biggest success?
I consider regaining my relationship with God my biggest success and being alive today to share hope, joy and love with others who are struggling.

What is the most influential book you’ve read besides the Bible?
I would have to say The Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck. I read this book so many times, and the imagery and historical significance helped shape my perception of the human spirit.

Who has most impacted you on your spiritual walk?
Reading Crazy Love by Francis Chan had a huge impact on my spiritual walk. The way Francis speaks resonates with me in a deep way.

How did you come to know Christ?
I grew up in a very religious family, and have always been well-read in the Bible. The truth is, though, it wasn’t until I hit my rock bottom and came to the Mission that I was truly introduced to who Christ really is.

Which biblical character do you identify with the most?
I’ve always identified with Esther. She had the courage and faith to stand up for her people and God even though the consequences could have cost her life.

What is your favorite memory at the Mission?
I have so many, but I love watching every graduation and baptism. Being a part of lives that are changing is such a gift.

What do you like most about being part of the Mission team?
We are so much more than a team; we are family.

Why the Gospel Mission?
Working for the Mission is so much more than a job. This is a way of life that God has so generously blessed me with.
